Why Indians queued overnight for iPhone 18 despite fast delivery options

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale in India on Friday, September 18, drawing buyers to Apple Stores in Mumbai, Delhi, Noida and Bengaluru hours before doors opened.

Some customers arrived in the early morning, while others waited outside stores overnight. The scenes came at a time when buyers did not necessarily need to visit a store at all: Apple had opened pre-orders on September 12, while online retailers and quick-commerce platforms also offered ways to receive the new phones without standing in line.

Apple confirmed that India was among the first markets to receive the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with availability beginning on September 18.

Why buyers still went to Apple Stores

For some customers, launch day appeared to be about more than simply getting a phone.

Crowds gathered at Apple’s Select Citywalk store in Saket, Delhi, Jio World Drive in Mumbai and locations in Bengaluru. PTI reported that some buyers had travelled from other parts of India, while customers in Mumbai and Bengaluru described arriving hours before the stores opened.

In Mumbai, one buyer told PTI that he had travelled from Nashik and had been waiting since 10pm the previous night. Another customer in Bengaluru said he arrived around 5am and found buyers who had travelled from states including Haryana, Delhi and Maharashtra.

That behaviour helps explain why the queue remains part of Apple’s annual launch in India. For dedicated customers, being among the first owners can itself be part of the event, alongside the opportunity to visit an Apple Store, collect a pre-booked device and experience the launch atmosphere.

The physical queue therefore serves a different purpose from a delivery slot. A customer ordering online is primarily buying convenience; someone arriving before sunrise is also participating in the launch-day experience.

Online delivery offered a very different route

The unusual part of this year’s launch was the range of alternatives available to customers who did not want to queue.

Apple accepted pre-orders from September 12 through its online store and Apple Store app. Authorised retail channels also participated in the launch.

Quick-commerce services added another layer to the competition for launch-day convenience. Gulf News reported that BigBasket said it had delivered more than 300 iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units by 9am on launch day, while Blinkit and Zepto were also offering the phones in eligible locations.

That meant some Indian customers could potentially receive the same device at home while others were still waiting outside an Apple Store.

The difference illustrates how smartphone launches have changed. The traditional launch-day queue has not disappeared, but it now exists alongside a delivery network capable of putting premium electronics in customers’ hands without a physical store visit.

iPhone 18 Pro prices start above Rs 1.6 lakh

The price has not prevented buyers from turning up for the new Pro models.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 in India, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. The highest-capacity 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max is priced at ₹3,29,900.

Apple says the new Pro models use its A20 Pro chip and feature a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The company has also highlighted improvements to battery performance and its AI capabilities. The Pro Max is offered in a new burgundy finish.

These upgrades provide the immediate product reason for existing iPhone owners to consider switching. But the launch-day queues suggest that the purchase decision for at least some customers extends beyond specifications.

India remains an important Apple market

The scale of the launch is also relevant to Apple’s wider position in India.

India was included in the first wave of markets for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside countries including the UAE, US, UK, China, Japan and several European markets.

The simultaneous availability reduces the traditional gap between major international markets and India, giving Indian customers access to Apple’s latest Pro models at launch rather than waiting for a later release.

For retailers and delivery platforms, meanwhile, launch day represents an opportunity to compete around speed, availability and convenience.

For Apple Store customers, the attraction is different: the queue itself has become part of the ritual surrounding a new iPhone generation.

That is why an overnight wait can coexist with a delivery option that takes only a fraction of the time. The two choices are solving different needs. One prioritises convenience; the other turns the purchase into an event.
