Shubman Gill, India fined by ICC for slow over-rate in West Indies ODI

Shubman Gill, India fined by ICC for slow over-rate in West Indies ODI

India captain Shubman Gill has been fined after India were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the third and final ODI against West Indies in New Chandigarh.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on October 5 that India were four overs short of their required over-rate after time allowances were taken into account. The Indian team was therefore fined 20% of its match fee.

West Indies were also sanctioned for the same offence. Shai Hope’s side was ruled to be two overs short and received a 10% fine.

The sanctions were imposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Under the provision, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

Both Gill and Hope pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions. As a result, no formal hearings were required. The charges were brought by the on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.

West Indies finish ODI series with record chase

The disciplinary action came after a high-scoring third ODI that West Indies won by five wickets.

India posted 351 for seven, with KL Rahul remaining unbeaten on 129, before West Indies chased down the target with Shai Hope making an unbeaten 162. The victory gave West Indies a memorable finish to the ODI leg of the tour, although India had already secured the three-match series 2-1.

Hope’s innings was particularly notable. The ICC reported that his unbeaten 162 was the highest score by a West Indies men’s batter in a successful ODI run chase, surpassing Brian Lara’s previous national record of 153 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1993.

India had won the first two matches of the series. In the second ODI in Guwahati, Gill produced one of the outstanding innings of the series, hitting an unbeaten 223 as India successfully chased 406. The ICC described India’s chase as the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

Gill finished the three-match series as Player of the Series after scoring 334 runs, including 110 in the opening ODI, 223 not out in Guwahati and one run in the series finale.

T20I series next

India and West Indies will now switch formats for a five-match T20I series, with the opening match scheduled for October 6 in Lucknow.

For Gill, the ODI series ended with an individual award and a series victory, but the ICC sanction adds a disciplinary note to India’s otherwise strong campaign. The slow-over-rate penalties relate specifically to the time taken to complete the required overs and do not alter the result of the match or the 2-1 series outcome.
