Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 Becomes First Tamil Film to Cross ₹800 Crore Worldwide

Rajinikanth’s latest action entertainer, Jailer 2, has entered a new chapter in Tamil cinema’s box-office history. The film crossed the ₹800-crore worldwide gross milestone on November 1, becoming the first Tamil-language production to achieve the feat, according to trade estimates reported on November 2.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel reached an estimated worldwide gross of ₹807.25 crore by its 18th day in cinemas. Its performance has been supported by strong domestic collections and a substantial contribution from overseas audiences.

The film earned approximately ₹11.20 crore in net domestic collections on its third Sunday, November 1. This represented an increase from the estimated ₹9.70 crore collected on Saturday, helping the production maintain its momentum into its third weekend.

Overseas collections push Jailer 2 beyond the milestone

India remains the film’s largest market, but its overseas performance has played an important role in taking the worldwide total beyond ₹800 crore.

According to figures attributed to Sacnilk by NDTV Profit, Jailer 2 had accumulated approximately ₹456.30 crore in net domestic collections and ₹533.75 crore in domestic gross earnings by Day 18.

Its overseas gross collection was estimated at ₹273.50 crore, bringing the combined worldwide gross to ₹807.25 crore. These are trade estimates rather than independently audited final figures, and box-office totals may differ between tracking platforms.

The film’s third-Sunday earnings also showed that audience interest had not disappeared after its opening weeks. It collected ₹8 crore net from the Tamil version alone on November 1. The Hindi version contributed ₹1.75 crore, followed by ₹1 crore from Telugu and ₹45 lakh from Kannada.

Rajinikanth’s film sets a new benchmark for Tamil cinema

The ₹800-crore achievement places Jailer 2 ahead of previous Tamil cinema box-office benchmarks.

The film had already moved past Rajinikanth’s 2018 science-fiction action film 2.0, directed by S. Shankar, to become the highest-grossing Tamil film according to the reported worldwide trade figures.

It has also become the first Tamil film to enter the ₹800-crore worldwide gross club, a milestone that reflects the commercial reach of Tamil-language cinema beyond its traditional domestic audience.

What makes Jailer 2 a major theatrical release?

Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 is a sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 film Jailer. The actor returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer at the centre of the action story.

Nelson Dilipkumar returns as director, bringing together a large ensemble cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Yogi Babu, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, S. J. Suryah and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

Anirudh Ravichander composed the film’s music. The combination of Rajinikanth’s established screen popularity, a returning director and a multi-star cast helped make the sequel one of the year’s closely watched Indian theatrical releases.

The film’s next box-office challenge will be maintaining its theatrical audience as new releases enter cinemas. Its ₹800-crore milestone, however, has already secured a place for Jailer 2 in the record books of tamil.
