Dubai: flydubai is expanding beyond passenger aviation with the launch of dedicated freighter operations from Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) on October 1, 2026, creating additional air-cargo capacity for regional trade and logistics.
The Dubai-based airline will initially operate three Boeing 737-800 freighter aircraft under a wet-lease arrangement with Dubai South-based air-cargo company SolitAir. Together, the aircraft will provide an additional 23,000kg of payload capacity per flight, according to flydubai.
The new operation gives flydubai dedicated main-deck cargo space, complementing freight that is already transported in the belly holds of its passenger aircraft.
The airline currently operates a fleet of 98 Boeing 737 passenger aircraft. It said cargo capacity is expected to increase further as its planned Boeing 787 Dreamliners enter the fleet.
Why flydubai is adding freighters
The dedicated cargo operation comes ahead of the fourth-quarter peak trading season and represents the first stage of flydubai’s planned expansion of its cargo business.
Rather than relying solely on passenger aircraft for freight, dedicated freighters allow the carrier to offer greater control over cargo space and scheduling. That is particularly relevant for shipments that require specialised handling or predictable main-deck capacity.
flydubai said the new aircraft will be able to support shipments including pharmaceuticals, perishables, live animals, dangerous goods, aerospace components and express courier consignments.
The airline’s existing cargo operation already handles several specialised categories. Its official cargo information lists services for general freight, priority shipments, temperature-controlled goods, valuable cargo, courier shipments, mail and live animals.
More than 125 destinations in reach
The freighter operation will be based at DWC, giving flydubai Cargo access to the airport’s dedicated airside infrastructure and the wider logistics network of Dubai South.
The airline plans to provide scheduled freight services as well as ad-hoc charter solutions across a network covering more than 125 destinations. These markets span Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Central and Southeast Europe, the GCC, the wider Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Initial flights are expected to focus on high-demand regional routes, with frequencies increasing as additional capacity becomes available.
For businesses using Dubai as a distribution point, the additional main-deck capacity could provide another option for moving goods between regional markets and the emirate’s wider air, road and logistics infrastructure.
DWC takes on a bigger cargo role
The decision to base the freighters at Al Maktoum International Airport also adds another layer to Dubai’s developing aviation and logistics ecosystem.
Dubai South’s Logistics District is designed around connections between air cargo, road transport and other trade infrastructure. The wider area provides access to facilities linked to Al Maktoum International Airport as well as road connections and Jebel Ali’s logistics ecosystem.
The location is already attracting major logistics investment. For example, FedEx has established a new Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa regional hub at DWC, representing an investment of more than AED 1.3 billion and incorporating automated sorting, AI-enabled cargo screening and temperature-controlled storage.
flydubai’s freighter operation therefore adds to an expanding cargo environment around DWC rather than operating in isolation.
From airline cargo to broader logistics services
flydubai said its longer-term objective is to develop its cargo business into a full-service logistics operation.
The airline plans to combine scheduled freight services with charter solutions, while continuing to assess how its fleet can support cargo growth.
It is also evaluating the possibility of converting passenger aircraft into freighters from 2029, potentially giving the cargo operation additional capacity in the years ahead.
For now, the three Boeing 737-800 freighters will form the starting point of the programme.
flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said the expansion supports Dubai’s ambitions to strengthen its position as a global trade and logistics hub. The airline has also said commercial partners are increasingly seeking guaranteed main-deck capacity, flexible scheduling and specialised handling as regional trade requirements evolve.
The October launch will therefore mark a shift in flydubai’s cargo strategy: from primarily using passenger aircraft for freight to operating a dedicated freighter capability based in Dubai.
