XRG expands Caspian gas footprint with Southern Gas Corridor deal

ABU DHABI: UAE energy investment company XRG has strengthened its position in the Caspian region through an equity investment in Azerbaijan’s Southern Gas Corridor, a major natural gas network connecting Caspian production with markets in Türkiye and Europe.

XRG signed the sales and purchase agreement with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy on February 2, 2026, in a ceremony attended by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. The agreement followed an earlier non-binding arrangement announced in November 2025.

The financial value of the transaction and the precise size of XRG’s stake were not disclosed in the initial announcement. A June 2026 report citing an XRG source said the acquisition process was expected to be completed in September.

The investment places XRG inside an energy system that stretches from Azerbaijan’s Caspian resources through Georgia and Türkiye towards southern Europe.

Why the Southern Gas Corridor matters

The Southern Gas Corridor is a roughly 3,500-kilometre gas transportation system designed to diversify European energy supplies. It consists of the South Caucasus Pipeline, the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).

The network carries gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea towards European markets. TAP forms the European section of the route, crossing Greece and Albania before passing beneath the Adriatic Sea to Italy.

The corridor began delivering Azerbaijani gas to the European Union in December 2020 and has become an important part of European efforts to diversify gas supply routes. The European Commission describes diversification of supply sources and routes as a key element of EU energy security.

Southern Gas Corridor CJSC, the Azerbaijani holding company involved in the transaction, has interests across gas production and transportation assets, including Shah Deniz, the South Caucasus Pipeline, TANAP and TAP. XRG’s investment therefore provides exposure to both upstream gas resources and the infrastructure used to transport them.

A wider Caspian strategy for XRG

For XRG, the investment builds on an existing relationship with Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR.

XRG already has a 30 per cent interest in the Absheron gas and condensate field in Azerbaijan. The company also holds a 38 per cent interest in the offshore Block 1 gas concession in Turkmenistan, giving it a broader position across the Caspian region.

The company’s strategy has increasingly focused on building an international gas and LNG portfolio spanning production, infrastructure and supply markets. Its Southern Gas Corridor investment extends that strategy beyond gas production into transportation infrastructure.

The development also comes as XRG continues expanding internationally. In 2026, the company has announced investments and partnerships involving LNG and gas assets in markets including the US, Argentina and Venezuela.

UAE-Azerbaijan energy ties

The Southern Gas Corridor investment adds another layer to the growing energy relationship between the UAE and Azerbaijan.

The two countries have increased cooperation in energy and infrastructure, while XRG and SOCAR have developed partnerships around Azerbaijan’s gas resources. The February agreement was signed in the presence of the leaders of both countries, underlining the strategic nature of the transaction.

The investment also gives XRG exposure to infrastructure that is becoming more important as European buyers seek diversified sources of natural gas.

TAP has already expanded its transportation capability. In March 2026, the pipeline operator announced that the first stage of its expansion had added 1.2 billion cubic metres per year of incremental long-term capacity. TAP said more than 55 billion cubic metres of Caspian gas had been transported to Europe by that point.

What the deal means for Europe

The transaction does not by itself create a new gas pipeline to Europe. Instead, it gives XRG an ownership position in an existing integrated network that is already transporting Azerbaijani gas to European markets.

That distinction is important as European energy policy increasingly focuses on supply diversification and infrastructure resilience.

The Southern Gas Corridor currently has the capacity to deliver up to 26 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually across its broader value chain, according to XRG.

Future expansion of the corridor could increase the volume of Azerbaijani gas reaching European customers, although the pace and scale of any additional capacity will depend on infrastructure, commercial agreements and available gas supplies.

For Abu Dhabi, the investment also demonstrates how XRG is positioning itself across the international gas value chain rather than concentrating solely on production assets.

What did XRG acquire in Azerbaijan?

XRG agreed to acquire an equity stake in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC, the Azerbaijani company holding interests in major gas production and pipeline assets.

What is the Southern Gas Corridor?

It is a roughly 3,500-kilometre gas transportation network carrying Azerbaijani Caspian gas towards Türkiye and Europe through the South Caucasus Pipeline, TANAP and TAP.

When was the XRG agreement signed?

The sales and purchase agreement was signed on February 2, 2026.

Does the deal create a new gas pipeline?

No. XRG’s investment provides an equity position in an existing Southern Gas Corridor value chain rather than creating a new pipeline.

Where does the gas come from?

The corridor transports natural gas from Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea resources, including the Shah Deniz field, towards European markets.

Why is the corridor important to Europe?

It provides an additional gas supply route and supports Europe’s strategy of diversifying energy sources and transportation routes.

How does the deal fit XRG’s strategy?

It expands XRG’s presence in the Caspian region and gives the company exposure to integrated gas production and transportation infrastructure.

How large is XRG’s stake?

The initial XRG announcement did not disclose the percentage or financial value of the investment. A later report said XRG was expected to acquire a 12.5 per cent stake, but this should be attributed rather than presented as an independently confirmed figure.Azerbaijan
