Dubai: Indian students in the UAE whose Class 12 CBSE examinations were cancelled earlier this year have been given another opportunity to sit for the affected papers. But for some families, the announcement has arrived after months of uncertainty over results, university admissions and academic plans.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced on September 15 that it would conduct special examinations for eligible Class 12 candidates in West Asian countries whose results were declared under the assessment scheme after 40 examinations could not be held during the March-April exam period.
The affected subjects cover 20 academic and 20 skill-based subjects. They include mathematics, applied mathematics, biology, economics, business studies, English Core, computer science, artificial intelligence and data science, alongside vocational subjects such as banking, insurance, tourism, healthcare, marketing and food production.
For UAE families, however, the practical question is not simply whether students have another chance to take an examination. It is whether that opportunity can still make a meaningful difference after the disrupted academic year and the subsequent assessment and admissions process.
Registration opens September 22
CBSE has set a short registration window for the special examinations.
Eligible regular and private candidates must submit their List of Candidates or examination forms between September 22 and September 26, 2026. CBSE has said the deadline will not be extended.
The opportunity is limited to students who had already submitted examination forms for the 2026 main examinations and whose results were declared through the assessment scheme.
Students who were absent from the original March examination for another reason are not eligible. New candidates who did not register for the 2026 main examination also cannot enter through this process.
There is no examination fee for the special retake, while examination centres are expected to remain the same as previously allotted.
New marks will replace the assessment-based result
One of the most important provisions is the treatment of the new examination score.
Students can select the subjects they wish to retake from those covered by the CBSE notification. The marks obtained in the special examination will be treated as the final marks for those subjects, replacing the earlier assessment-based result.
CBSE has also said students cannot change subjects after submitting the forms.
The Board has not yet released the detailed examination timetable. According to its announcement, the schedule will be issued after the registration process is completed.
Why the timing matters for UAE students
The examination decision follows months of disruption.
CBSE cancelled the remaining Class 12 examinations in several West Asian countries, including the UAE, after regional tensions prevented papers from being conducted as originally scheduled. In the UAE alone, 10,198 students had been registered for the Class 12 examination, according to the CBSE regional office.
CBSE subsequently introduced an alternative assessment process for the affected students. The results were declared in May, with marks calculated through the assessment framework for subjects that could not be conducted.
That sequence has left some families dealing with two different concerns: the marks already received and the consequences those marks may have for higher education.
Earlier in the year, UAE parents had raised concerns about how assessment-based scores would affect university admissions, particularly where institutions use subject-specific marks or minimum percentage requirements.
The latest CBSE decision therefore changes the options available to eligible students, but it does not automatically resolve every admissions issue.
Students must weigh the retake against their current plans
The special examination is optional in the sense that eligible students can choose the subjects they want to reappear for. But because the new score will replace the earlier assessment-based result, students and families will need to consider the implications before registering.
The decision is particularly significant for students whose university applications, admissions or course choices depend on their Class 12 marks.
CBSE has not announced a mechanism allowing students to retain whichever of the two results is better. Its notification instead states that the marks from the special examination will be treated as final for the subjects retaken.
There will also be no further post-result declaration facility after this special examination round, according to the Board’s announcement.
A dispute that reached the Supreme Court
The special examination follows legal action by affected Gulf and West Asian students.
In July, the Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and CBSE on a petition concerning the disruption to Class 12 examinations. The petition sought several forms of relief, including special examinations, grace marks, admission-related concessions and measures intended to prevent affected students from losing an academic year.
CBSE’s September decision came after the court proceedings and refers directly to compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision in CWP-815 of 2026.
The Board has also shared the notification with Indian missions in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and other affected countries to help coordinate implementation.
What UAE students need to know
For an eligible UAE student, the immediate steps are:
- Check whether the student’s 2026 result was issued under the CBSE assessment scheme.
- Confirm that the required subject is among the 40 subjects covered by the special examination.
- Submit the examination form between September 22 and September 26.
- Select subjects carefully because subject changes will not be permitted after submission.
- Follow the CBSE announcement for the examination timetable.
- Check directly with universities about whether and how a revised CBSE result will be considered.
The CBSE notification places responsibility on schools in affected countries to inform eligible students and assist them with the process.
For families who have already moved forward with university applications, the timing of any revised CBSE result could remain an important practical issue. The effect will depend on the individual university, course and admission rules rather than on a single UAE-wide policy.
The special examinations therefore provide an additional examination route for an affected cohort, while leaving students and families with a limited registration window and decisions to make about whether retaking particular subjects fits their academic plans.
