GUWAHATI: Shubman Gill produced one of the most explosive innings of his ODI career on Wednesday, scoring an unbeaten 223 as India chased down a 406-run target against the West Indies in Guwahati.
Gill reached his double century from only 117 balls, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls for the fastest men’s ODI double hundred. He eventually finished on 223 from 133 deliveries as India completed the chase with 39 balls remaining.
The performance came in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on September 30, 2026, after West Indies had posted 405/7.
It was Gill’s second ODI double century. His first came in January 2023, when he scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad. The two innings were separated by exactly 1,351 days.
Gill turns a huge chase into a one-sided finish
West Indies appeared to have put India under pressure after posting their first 400-plus ODI total.
John Campbell scored 101, Shai Hope made 104 and Amir Jangoo added 114 as three West Indies batters reached centuries in the same innings. Reuters reported that this was only the sixth ODI innings in which three batters from the same side had scored hundreds.
India’s response was led by Gill and Rohit Sharma.
Rohit contributed 101, while the opening pair put together a 255-run partnership. Gill then carried the chase deep into the innings, reaching 200 before completing his unbeaten 223.
India eventually reached 406/2, winning by eight wickets with 39 balls still unused.
The result also made India only the second team to successfully chase a target of more than 400 in men’s ODI cricket, according to Reuters’ match report.
A second double century for Gill
Gill’s latest performance puts him alongside Rohit Sharma as the only two men’s ODI batters to have recorded multiple double centuries.
His first came against New Zealand in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023, when he made 208. The latest innings therefore ended a 1,351-day gap between his two ODI double hundreds.
The timing also adds to Gill’s recent ODI form. ICC’s player profile records that he had scored 110 against West Indies in the first ODI on September 27 before his double century in the second match.
Gill’s 200 also came after he had already broken the record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain during the innings, reaching three figures from 62 balls, according to Indian Express.
West Indies’ 405 was not enough
West Indies’ total of 405/7 was built around three centuries, with Campbell, Hope and Jangoo all passing 100.
But India’s response quickly shifted the match away from the visitors. Gill’s aggressive scoring ensured that the required rate remained manageable despite the size of the target.
By the time India completed the chase, Gill had remained unbeaten on 223 while India had lost only two wickets.
The second ODI also settled the three-match series for India after the hosts won the opening match in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets. The teams are scheduled to meet for the third ODI on October 3 at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
For Gill, however, the Guwahati match will be remembered primarily for a record that came during an extraordinary chase: his 200 arrived faster than any previous men’s ODI double century.
