Aaryavir Sehwag named Delhi U-19 captain for Vinoo Mankad Trophy

Aaryavir Sehwag has been handed his first major leadership assignment after being named captain of Delhi’s Under-19 team for the 2026–27 Vinoo Mankad Trophy.

The 18-year-old batter, son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, will lead a 16-member Delhi squad when the one-day competition begins in Visakhapatnam on October 8.

The appointment comes soon after Aaryavir’s first appearance for India Under-19. He was included in India’s squad for the three-match Youth ODI series against Australia Under-19 in September, with all three matches played in Rajkot. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had named him in the ODI squad announced in August.

Aaryavir made a promising start to that series, scoring 28 in the opening match, 47 in the second and 34 in the third. He finished with 109 runs across his three innings as India completed a 3-0 series sweep.

Now, his focus turns back to domestic age-group cricket, but with considerably more responsibility.

Delhi hand Aaryavir the captaincy

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has selected Aaryavir to lead its Under-19 side for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, with Arnav Bugga named vice-captain.

The squad includes several players who have featured alongside Aaryavir in Delhi’s junior setup, including Tanmay Chaudhary, Dhanya Nakra, Uday Chawla, Garv Kumar and wicketkeepers Abhiraj Gagan Singh and Tarun Singh.

Delhi’s campaign is scheduled to begin in Visakhapatnam on October 8. The tournament provides Aaryavir with an immediate opportunity to translate his recent exposure to international youth cricket into leadership at the domestic level.

From 297 for Delhi to India U-19

Aaryavir has already produced a standout innings in Delhi’s age-group cricket.

In the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy, he scored 297 against Meghalaya in Shillong. The innings contained 51 fours and three sixes, leaving him just three runs short of a triple century.

That performance helped establish his reputation as one of Delhi’s promising young batters. His progress continued into 2026, when he was also part of the West Delhi Lions setup in the Delhi Premier League before receiving his India Under-19 opportunity.

The Australia series gave him another important experience. Rather than turning his starts into a major score, he produced three useful contributions and gained exposure to the demands of representative cricket.

His elevation to the Delhi captaincy now adds another test: managing his own batting while taking responsibility for a young team.

A new responsibility at a crucial stage

The timing of the appointment is notable. Aaryavir has moved from being a promising Delhi junior to an India Under-19 player and now a domestic captain within a relatively short period.

The Vinoo Mankad Trophy will therefore provide a different challenge from the Australia series. As captain, he will be expected to contribute with the bat while helping set the direction for Delhi’s campaign.

The tournament begins on October 8, giving Aaryavir and his teammates little time to settle into their roles before competitive action starts.

For Aaryavir, the next stage will be about building consistency and demonstrating that the leadership opportunity is another step in his own cricketing development.

His surname will inevitably attract attention. The more significant measure, however, will be what he does with the responsibility now placed in his hands.
