UAE residents who studied in UK can win fully funded trip back

Dubai: UAE residents who studied at recognised UK higher education institutions have an opportunity to compete for the Study UK Alumni Awards 2027, with four eventual global winners set to receive a funded visit to the UK.

The awards are run by the British Council and recognise international alumni whose UK education has contributed to achievements in business, culture, science, sustainability or social action. The UAE is among the countries hosting a national-level awards process for the 2027 programme.

The opportunity is aimed at qualifying UK alumni living outside the UK, rather than UAE residents generally. Applicants must have studied at degree level or above at a recognised UK higher education institution, with the relevant study completed within the last 15 years.

Four categories for UAE-based UK alumni

Applicants can enter one of four categories.

Business and Innovation is designed for alumni involved in innovative ideas, business opportunities and solutions, including work in entrepreneurship, technology and finance.

The Culture, Creativity and Sport category covers careers and achievements in areas including arts, design, media, music, television, sport and online content creation.

The Science and Sustainability award focuses on achievements in science and sustainability, including climate action, clean energy, medicine, engineering, construction and sustainable communities.

The Social Action category recognises people whose work has contributed to positive social change, including initiatives involving education, equality, poverty reduction, humanitarian work, peace and justice.

The British Council says applications are assessed partly on the scale of an applicant’s impact, the influence of their UK education on their career, their potential to inspire future students and the overall quality of the application.

Who can apply?

The programme is open to international UK alumni who are living outside the UK.

According to the British Council’s eligibility rules, applicants must have studied within the last 15 years — covering 2011 to 2026 for the 2027 awards — and must have studied at degree level or above at a recognised UK higher education institution.

Eligible study can include a course undertaken at a UK university for at least one term or semester, or a full UK degree-level qualification awarded by a recognised UK institution through transnational education.

Professional short courses qualify only where they meet the programme’s degree-level requirements. Post-doctoral researchers are not eligible.

Applicants who have previously entered the awards may be able to apply again if they meet the current criteria, although previous global winners cannot re-enter.

What do winners receive?

The awards have both national and global stages.

Successful UAE applicants can be recognised through the country’s awards process and connect with fellow alumni, university partners and other stakeholders. National winners are then automatically considered for the global Study UK Alumni Awards.

At the global level, 28 finalists are selected across the four categories and seven regions. Four global winners — one in each category — will be invited to the UK.

The British Council’s terms state that the global winners will receive a return flight and visit to the UK to reconnect with their university or universities and meet UK stakeholders. The British Council will cover visa application costs, flights, airport travel, UK transportation, accommodation and meals during the professional programme, in line with its travel policy.

That means the advertised UK trip is tied to winning at the global level. It is not a free holiday offered to every UAE applicant.

Application deadline

Applications for the 2027 awards opened on September 1, 2026.

The British Council’s UAE Study UK page currently lists October 16, 2026, at 5pm UK time as the closing deadline. Its global application guidance and terms also list October 15 at 5pm UK time for the wider programme, while the UAE-specific page gives October 16 for UAE applicants. Applicants in the UAE should therefore follow the deadline displayed on the official UAE application page when submitting.

The British Council says applicants can save their application and return to complete it, but the final submission must be made before the applicable deadline.

For prospective applicants, the application asks candidates to explain their achievements, the impact of their work, how their UK education contributed to their success and how they have shared their UK study experience with others.

The official UAE application information is available through the British Council’s Study UK Alumni Awards 2027 page.

For UAE-based professionals who built their careers after studying in Britain, the awards offer more than recognition: they provide a route into an international alumni network and, for the four global winners, a return to the UK for professional and networking opportunities.

Who can apply for the Study UK Alumni Awards 2027 in the UAE?

Eligible international alumni living in the UAE can apply if they meet the programme’s requirements, including having studied at degree level or above at a recognised UK higher education institution within the last 15 years.

Is the UK trip available to every UAE applicant?

No. The funded UK visit is a prize for the four global winners, one from each award category.

What are the four Study UK Alumni Awards categories?

The categories are Business and Innovation; Culture, Creativity and Sport; Science and Sustainability; and Social Action.

What does the global winner receive?

Each global winner is invited to the UK for a professional programme involving networking, development opportunities and reconnection with their university or universities. The British Council covers specified travel and programme expenses.

When did applications open?

Applications opened on September 1, 2026.

When is the UAE application deadline?

The British Council’s UAE page currently states October 16, 2026, at 17:00 BST. Applicants should check the official UAE page before submitting because the programme’s wider terms show a different global deadline.

Do applicants need to have studied recently?

They must generally have studied within the last 15 years, meaning the relevant period for the 2027 awards is 2011–2026.

Is this a scholarship?

No. The British Council explicitly describes the Alumni Awards as an awards programme, not a scholarship opportunity.
