DUBAI: Gulf Giants Development recovered from a difficult start with the bat to defeat Desert Vipers Development by four wickets and lift the fourth DP World ILT20 Development Tournament title at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Thursday.
Chasing 144 for victory, the Giants slipped to 89/6 before Sohaib Khan and Junaid Shamsudheen steadied the innings. The pair stayed together until the finish, taking Gulf Giants Development to 144/6 in 18.4 overs.
The result completed a turnaround for the Giants, who had also beaten Abu Dhabi Knight Riders Development by six wickets in the semi-final the previous day. Desert Vipers Development had reached the final after defeating Sharjah Warriorz Development by 25 runs in the other semi-final.
Vipers post 143 in Dubai
Desert Vipers Development were sent in to bat and were bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs.
Harshit Kaushik top-scored with 42 from 32 balls, while Khuzaima Bin Tanveer added a brisk 30 from 17 deliveries. Israr Ahmad also provided early momentum with 24 from 12 balls.
Aayan Khan led the Gulf Giants attack with three wickets for 33 runs. Hazret Luqman claimed two wickets, while Haider Razzaq produced an economical spell of four overs for 14 runs and one wicket.
The Vipers’ total gave the Giants a manageable target, but their chase quickly became uncertain.
Giants lose four wickets early
Gulf Giants Development lost four wickets for 48 runs during the powerplay, with Khuzaima Bin Tanveer making an immediate impact with the ball.
Sagar Kalyan then counter-attacked, scoring 39 from 22 balls with four fours and two sixes. His innings helped prevent the chase from slipping away completely before he was dismissed with the score at 89/6.
That left the Giants needing a composed finish.
Sohaib Khan supplied it. He remained unbeaten on 30 from 23 balls, while Junaid Shamsudheen finished 29 not out from 29 deliveries. Their unbroken 55-run partnership carried Gulf Giants Development across the target with eight balls remaining.
Wasim Akram was the Vipers’ other major contributor with the ball, taking two wickets.
Kalyan finishes as tournament’s leading run-scorer
Sagar Kalyan’s performances throughout the competition earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
He accumulated 280 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 189, including three half-centuries. Desert Vipers Development’s Wali Muhammad Afridi finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets in seven innings.
The Development Tournament is designed to give emerging UAE cricketers exposure and experience while providing a pathway towards opportunities with the six DP World ILT20 franchises. The 2026 edition featured six development teams representing those franchises.
That pathway is particularly relevant now, with the DP World ILT20 Season 5 Player Auction scheduled for October 1, 2026, at the ICC Academy in Dubai. The league’s official auction rules state that each franchise will also have a Right to Match option for a UAE player who played for that franchise in Season 4 or was part of its 2026 Development Squad.
For the players involved in Thursday’s final, the tournament therefore provided more than a title opportunity. Performances in Dubai also formed part of the wider development pathway leading into the next ILT20 season.
