Virat Kohli marked his return to India’s ODI side with a record-filled unbeaten 139 as India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.
Chasing 296, India reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Kohli’s innings came alongside a century from India captain Shubman Gill, who scored 110 from 108 balls.
Kohli’s contribution was not simply match-winning. During the chase, he became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 runs in men’s ODI cricket — and the fastest to the mark, reaching it in 315 innings.
Kohli reaches another ODI milestone
Kohli entered the match needing 59 runs to reach 15,000 ODI runs. He completed the milestone during India’s chase before going on to produce another century.
The 139 not out came from 88 deliveries, with Kohli striking 10 fours and nine sixes. He reached his hundred from 74 balls, making it the third-fastest ODI century of his career.
The century was Kohli’s 55th in ODI cricket and his 86th international century across formats, according to reports following the match.
Another record involving Tendulkar
Kohli’s century also took his ODI tally against West Indies to 10.
That puts him level with his own record of 10 ODI centuries against Sri Lanka. It also means Kohli has become the first batter to score 10 ODI hundreds against two different teams.
Tendulkar had previously held the benchmark for most ODI centuries against a single opposition with nine against Australia. Rohit Sharma also has nine ODI hundreds against Australia.
Kohli’s latest milestone therefore added another statistical link between his career and Tendulkar’s long-standing ODI records.
India make light work of 296
West Indies posted 295/7 after being sent in to bat. John Campbell made 62, while Justin Greaves scored a century, but Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul helped India keep the target within reach.
India’s chase initially featured Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit made 32 before being dismissed, after which Gill and Kohli took control.
The pair added 151 runs for the second wicket before Gill fell for 110. Kohli remained until the end, finishing the chase alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 13 not out.
India eventually reached 300/2 with 50 balls remaining.
Kuldeep was named Player of the Match for figures of 4/40 from his 10 overs.

The result gives India a 1-0 advantage in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI is scheduled for September 30 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, followed by the third match on October 3 in New Chandigarh.
For Kohli, the series now continues with several milestones already achieved in the opening match. His 15,000 ODI runs, 55th century and 10th ODI hundred against West Indies have made the first game of the series one of the most statistically significant innings of his ODI career.
